Katana and Kung Fu

Your now have a "Katana", that, once selected, will change your offensive from a gun-toting ballet into a sword slashing, butt kicking combat frenzy. Like Kung Fu, your Katana will always be by your side, and in some situations, you may still be able to use it without having to select it (see gun-katana™ section).

Although your kung fu is strong, many of the bad guys are still carrying guns and other weapons, so appropriate styles of attack should be adopted if you are to stand a fighting chance.

Basics Techniques

When you have the Katana selected, you will have 3 sets of basic attacks at your disposal - jabs, jump kicks and katana attacks. There are also two special attacks designed for specific situations.

Hilt Jabs
Not your most traditional Katana attack, but sometimes enemies just get too close for comfort -- rendering your katana blade an ineffective weapon. Jabs are quick, rapid fire attacks that smack the hilt of your Katana into an enemy’s face. They can be thrown at any time and that are easily aimed. Although jabs do not cause a significant amount of damage on their own, they cam stun the enemy and provide easy follow up for bigger hits or COMBOS. To jab, simply press the shoot button.

Jump Kicks
Jump kicks are much more powerful, but much slower attacks that can only be launched from a running start. Although sometimes a single jump kick is enough to take down an enemy, they are more difficult to aim and they do not link to COMBOS.

You have three basic jump kicks: a forward flying kick, a left jump spin kick and a right jump spin kick, which are performed respectively by running either forward, forward-left or forward-right and then pressing the shootdodge button.

Splits Kick
You now have a special kind of jump kick called the Splits Kick. This on-the-spot attack is especially good at defending yourself from side attackers, and being surrounded in general. To perform a splits kick, simply press the jump button from a standing position.

TIP: This move will leave you vulnerable from the front and behind – particularly when landing. Try turning in the air to cover all directions.

Katana Attacks
Katana attacks and combos make up the bulk of your arsenal. They are faster than jump kicks, and stronger than jabs and they are what make up COMBO attacks. However, katana hits can only be launched from a stand still position, so setting up takes some added effort. You have three basic quick attacks: a forward vertical strike, a 360 spin attack, and a right horizontal strike, which are performed respectively by either pressing forward, forward-left or forward-right and the shootdodge button at the same time from a standing position.

If a quick attack hits an enemy cleanly, you will immediately and automatically follow up with a COMBO attack. See the following section for more on COMBOS and other advanced fighting techniques.
