Special Techniques

These are secret techniques that are passed down from generation to generation that only a true Katana Master™ can attain; some of which are discussed here. You may discover more powerful techniques as you progress.

Backstab
Rarely will the enemies fight you on equal footing, so be prepared to engage combatants from all directions. By pressing backward and the shootdodge button from a standing position, you will perform a special single-handed thrusting stab that can eliminate enemies directly behind you. Be warned however: while the move can quickly get you out of an awkward situation, it’s not overly powerful, and leaves you somewhat vulnerable – as a result, you will not be able to follow up with a combo.

TIP: Experienced fighters will be anticipating this move, and are more likely to block it. Once you knock them off guard, either face them and finish them off, or move to a position where you’re not surrounded.

Dividing Thrust
Similar to the backstab, this devastating killing technique is a special thrusting stab attack, where you drive the katana deep into your foe’s body, and if it hits cleanly, you will kick them off your blade tumbling into walls or other enemies. Performing the move requires a little bit of preparation. First you must perform a hilt jab, either in the air, or against an enemy by pressing the shoot button. Then, when close to an enemy, press the reload button.

This is move is particularly effective in one-on-one situations, and can literally decimate weaker foes. It can also be used for knocking enemies backward without requiring a run up, thus creating space to plan your next move. Unfortunately, that the preparation required, and the nature of the attack can leave your defence open for a few crucial seconds.

TIP: Although it can be blocked, the stab & kick combination will give you a significant edge in battle – especially if you can kick them into a wall, into explosives, or over a cliff-like edge. It may also be possible to skewer two or more enemies like a kebab.

Gun-Katana™
Not quite what you’re thinking, but in Katana this refers to the combination of Katana and Gun combat, which is available with certain weapons like the Sawed-Off Shotgun and Throwing Knives. It is also available with other guns when you run out of Bullet-Time. In Gun-Katana™ mode, you will have the advantage of being able to both fire your gun and utilise your Katana at the same time, by performing quick attacks and combos (jabs being replaced by gun operation, obviously).

One key advantage of this is that you’re a force to be reckoned with from both close range and at a distance; although due to the spread of the pellets, the sawed-off the most efficient up close. Unfortunately, you sacrifice your ability to Shootdodge™ and perform the Dividing Strike (above).

TIP: Try to include shots during or at the end of a combo. A good clean shot will send an enemy tumbling backwards, giving you the option to charge at them, or continue shooting from a distance. Headshots from close range may produce even more surprising results.

Parrying
While there is no command to guard against enemy attacks; we’re of the philosophy that you don’t want to be standing around like a sitting duck anyway. However you can parry most enemy attacks by simply attacking at them. It’s automatic and there are no penalties for having to match attacks. It’s just simple, fast, and fun. Though watch out for more agile enemies who will dodge and duck your attacks, while sneaking in one of their own.
